Textual Linguistics - Present State and Perspectives

Summary

Analyzing contemporary theory and methodology of textual linguistics, the author considers the present state of the discipline - its cognitive attraction and explanation possibilities. She focuses on the outcome of the Polish research, as its development ran differently than in West-European area. She explores the way of conceptualization of the discipline subject - the text category. She analyzes the following text profiles: structuralist, pragmatic and cognitivist, searching for some continuity between them. Apparently, it is pragmatic concept of cohesion - communicative assumption and the point of destination, not belonging to text category. In the final part, she attempts to answer the question if the text concept will meet the demands of contemporary culture and civilization. She finds it necessary to modify some text determinants, especially at structural level (highlighting the role of message, stressing the multi-code and multi-level text character) and at pragmatic one (growing complexity of sender-recipient roles).

The Language of Paw królowej by Dorota Masłowska

Summary

In 2006 D. Masłowska received the Nike Literary Prize for her novel Paw królowej. Its language is a radical attempt to clash and contrast stylistically and grammatically totally different linguistic elements, the ways to describe and create the literary reality. In this prose, there are words and linguistic structures which would not meet anywhere else. There is an extreme stylistic syncretism, present in almost every sentence, to create a unique language, a lexical, phrasal, syntactic and, finally culture, compilation. The style is impossible to identify explicitly. It is pseudo-intellectual gibberish, youth slang and sociolect, primitive and vulgar language, colloquial style and cultured Polish. The style is supposed to ridicule primitive speech and simpleminded thinking about the world, criticizing popular, consumptive culture and a certain type of human mentality.

Sentences with an Accompanying Subject in Old and Contemporary Polish

Summary

As the analyzed material shows, sentences with an accompanying subject appeared as early as in Old Polish. The verb in such sentences came to double consensus with the subject about its form. When the person named by the accompanying subject was of minor importance, the verb adjusted its form with the main subject (e.g. Ojciec z synem wszedł - The father and the son came in). However, when the accompanying subject was as important as the main agent of action, the verb adjusted its form to either of the subject (e.g. Ojciec z synem wyszli). The tendency is also visible in contemporary Polish.

Translatorial Transfer of Joyce's Neologisms from Ulysses Extracts (translated by Maciej Słomczyński)

Summary

The aim of the article is to present basic problems of linguistic games' transfer. The analysis was based on the material excerpted from Ulysses by James Joyce. The words used in the description fulfill two basic criteria: neologism and linguistic game pattern in the word structure. Special attention was drawn to neologisms built as a game with a phonic form strategy. Speech sound and phonetic instrumentalization, cacophony and glossolalia seem crucial in this area.
The research method is an analysis of semantic-syntactic lexemes and hyperonymic definition. The analysis of the material shows that the source of the major translatorial difficulties is the relative untransferability of certain linguistic units, namely: idioms, phrases, onomatopoeia, neologisms originated from nonstandard derivation.

Ways to Confess Love and to Talk about Love (on the Material of the Websight www. wyznania.net)

Summary

The subject of the article is an analysis of ways in which the contemporary Polish confess love to each other. About 300 confessions of internet users from the website www.wyznania.net were used for the analysis. Apparently, the greatest variation of confessions is determined by the age of the senders much more than by their sex. Considering the frequency of the phrase kocham cię (I love you) usage, one may conclude that love confession means expressing just this phrase. Lovers accompany it with memories, compliments, promises of everlasting feelings, thanks, apologies, reflections of love and a lot more. Based on the theory of speech genres, we may assume that we have a culturally and linguistically codified pattern of love confession. Thanks to it, we can verbalize our feelings, communicate them to another person and feel the joy of receiving love confessions.
