On Ambiguity in Narrower and Broader Context

Summary

It is well-known how much the context matters in the choice of the appropriate meaning of a word which has many meanings. The article provides us with an attempt to specify the degree of sufficiency of the context to make a given verbal item recognizable. The analysis of the examples illustrating the use of words, whose semantic structure contains general meanings as well as specialized ones (musical vocabulary), shows their specific reception is affected by situational factors, non-linguistic ones, like for example, the subject of the text: in a book belonging to the musical discipline, the reader may find a relationship of the word used in it in the general meaning with the musical terminology easier than if it is a book of another discipline.

In the latter one he depicts a general project of lexicographic works to be carried out in the future, which contains: meta-lexicographic works (analysis of the published dictionaries), works attempting to describe contemporary Polish vocabulary, preparation of dictionaries of different kinds and usage, education of the users as well as research on the way the dictionaries are used. Such activities should be carried out by linguists in cooperation with lexicographers, programmers, teachers of various types of schools and with publishers, and they should be financed from public resources.

Lexical-Semantic Analysis of the First Commandment of the Decalogue

Summary

The text analysis of just one commandment in more than ten Polish translations of the Bible from the 15th to 20th century allows to reveal not only lexical-semantic changes which have occurred in the language, but also its amazing variety manifested in synonymy both in the 16th and 20th century. The following Polish versions reveal first of all differences in the way of depicting God, while other elements of the text remain unchanged. The analysis, which the article contains, seems to confirm once more the crucial value of the Bible translations for the studies on the history of Polish.

About Surnames, Nicknames and Invectives in Kisiel's Diaries

Summary

The author studies derivatives coming from surnames, occurring in great number in Stefan Kisielewski's Diaries. She analyses word-forming operations applied by the writer to create nicknames and invectives from surnames. She seems to pay the greatest attention to their stylistic and expressive distinctive features, as well as to their functions in the text of the Diaries.
